National Black Pudding Day / Samhain Festival 2019
On Sunday, 3rd November 2019, Hugh Maguire & Darina Allen will team up to launch the first National Black Pudding Day in Ireland.
Forgotten Skills with Darina Allen & the Smokin’ Butcher Hugh Maguire, commencing at 2pm on Sunday, will celebrate the craft behind the wonderful black pudding and will include a demonstration on making black pudding the artisan way. Hugh & Darina will also be exploring forgotten Irish cuts and discussing some of the lost skills in Irish cooking.
It will also be an opportunity to share delicious and diverse black pudding recipes.

Samhain is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of the year. Traditionally, it is celebrated from 31 October to 1 November, as the Celtic day began and ended at sunset.

Chef & Food Writer - Darina Allen
Darina Allen is one of Ireland’s best known cooks and a best-selling author who presented nine series of her cookery programme, Simply Delicious, on television in Ireland.
Darina established Ballymaloe Cookery School in 1983 with her brother Rory O’Connell. Her main passion and her daily task is to impart her knowledge to the students at the Ballymaloe Cookery School.
Darina also set up the first Farmers Market in Ireland on the Coal Quay in Cork in 1996, and has been a key activist in promoting organics, sustainable production and zero waste in the kitchen.
Event Details
The event in conjunction with Hinterland and Boyne Valley Flavours, to be held at the Headfort Arms Hotel, Kells, Co. Meath, is part of the Samhain – 5000 Years of Food & Culture Festival which runs from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd November 2019.
